Working while you are seeking asylum

While you are an asylum seeker you may work or prepare yourself in different ways for finding a job.

Can I work while seeking asylum?

Yes, you can work while seeking asylum, but in that case, you must have an LMA card as proof that you are an asylum-seeker in Sweden and show that you do not need a work permit. (LMA is an abbreviation of the Swedish name for the Reception of Asylum Seekers Act.) You can read more about what applies on the websites of the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) and Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket).

Salary and tax

If you have been receiving money from the Swedish Migration Agency while seeking asylum and you then find a job, you need to inform the Swedish Migration Agency of this. Thus, you cannot work and receive financial allowance at the same time.

Have your education and experience evaluated

If you have access to your certifications and transcripts, it is good to have them on hand at the planning meeting. It is possible to have your transcript translated. We will then evaluate individually whether your educational documents need to be assessed.
