Report absence to care for a sick child when you are participating in a programme

When you are participating in a programme, it is important to notify us of your absence if you are temporarily caring for a sick child (VAB). If we do not know why you are absent, you are at risk of receiving a warning or having your compensation suspended.

When do I provide notification of my absence to care for a sick child?

Notify us of your absence if you are participating in a programme and cannot participate in your planned activities because you have to care for a sick child.

Report on the first day that you are caring for a sick child

You must notify us of your absence from the first day that you are caring for a sick child. Otherwise, you are at risk of receiving a warning or having your compensation suspended – activity support (aktivitetsstöd), introduction benefit (etableringsersättning), or development allowance (utvecklingsersättning).

If you and someone else are sharing time to care for the child, you must notify us of your absence every new time that you are caring for the child.

If you are studying or participating in an internship, Swedish for Immigrants (SFI), Steps to Work (Steg till arbete), Prepare and Match (Rusta och matcha), or another activity with one of the Public Employment Service’s (Arbetsförmedlingen) suppliers, you must also inform them of your absence.

If you cannot notify us online, then instead, contact us to notify us that you are caring for a sick child.

You do not need to notify us when the child is healthy

You do not need to inform the Public Employment Service when you return to your programme and are no longer taking care of a sick child. In your application for activity support, introduction benefit, or development allowance with the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan), you mark which days you were caring for a sick child.

What compensation do I receive while caring for a sick child?

You receive compensation for the days you spent caring for a sick child. In other words, you keep your compensation (activity support, development allowance, or introduction benefit) for these days.

If you are working in addition to being in the programme, different rules apply if you cannot work because you need to care for a sick child. Read more on the Swedish Social Insurance Agency’s website.
