Tax, unemployment insurance and social insurance

When working abroad, tax, unemployment insurance and your right to social benefits are affected. What applies depends, among other things, on how long you plan to work abroad and in which country.

It’s a good idea to look up:

  • what rules apply to national registration in the country
  • if you need to register with local government agencies
  • what applies in terms of tax and social insurance.

The EURES portal provides information on topics such as the cost of living, healthcare and health services, and tax in different countries.

If you are working abroad, you may in some cases be exempt from paying tax in Sweden, depending on how long you work abroad and whether you pay tax in the country where you work. You can find more information at Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency).

Always contact your unemployment insurance fund before you start working abroad. It is important to do this so that there is no interruption of your membership and you do not lose your compensation.
